The Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation is pleased to announce that we will be a primary supporter of the project to stop the erosion of and eventually restore the three rapidly degrading mangrove islands on the northeast side of Cato’s Bridge in Tequesta! That restoration/ hardening has been led by the “Jupiter Narrows Conservation Alliance” for the past three years and is now in permitting.
Our initial $25,000 contribution will help fund through this year. We have committed to $175,000 in contributions over the next two years, as needed, as the project progresses to bidding and construction. It is anticipated that the restored/ hardened islands will be named after Andrew.
I first proposed this project in 2015 and my photos from then show tremendous degradation over just the past 9 years. I did not pursue this then because we had our hands full with what promised to be (and has been) successful offshore artificial reef building.
I snorkeled this area frequently in the 1970s and Andrew lived his last two years on the top floor of the condo nearest the bridge in 2014.
The Foundation’s most frequent request from our supporters has been for an inshore project they could see, experience and enjoy. This is going to be a great project that will make a positive difference for our community as we protect our environment from the impacts of population growth.
